About the Terra Ay Ay Project

The Terra Ay Ay Project is a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to fostering positive change and growth in St. Croix through scientifically robust air, water and soil quality monitoring and protection of our island’s natural resources.
The Terra Ay Ay Project is deeply rooted in the rich cultural heritage of St. Croix. As stewards of our home, we are committed to ensuring a healthy and sustainable environment for all residents.

Mission

At the heart of the Terra Ay Ay Project is a mission to promote environmental and community resilience. We aim to serve the community by providing unbiased data on air, soil, and water quality, empowering residents to make informed decisions for a healthier future.

Through community engagement, we advocate for increased transparency from businesses and responsive environmental policies from local government regulators.

Objectives

Community-Based Air Monitoring: Establishing a network of PurpleAir monitors installed at community members’ homes, in St. Croix’s historically most impacted neighborhoods. Providing real-time data on air quality, ensuring transparency and accessibility for all.

Well and Cistern Water Quality Testing: Identifying contaminants in the residential water supplies of St. Croix communities that have been most affected by industrial and climate pollution.

Food Grower’s Soil Testing: Partnering with local food growers and backyard gardeners to test soil for contaminants, ensuring a healthy and safe environment for our agricultural community.

Educational Outreach: Hosting town halls, community meetings, and educational programs to raise awareness about air, water and soil quality issues, helping inform residents how to manage the impacts of industrial and natural changes.

Student Involvement: Collaborating with the University of the Virgin Islands to train interested students as citizen scientists, fostering St. Croix’s next generation of environmental stewards.

Guiding Policy and Advocacy: Using collected data to inform local government policies and regulations, advocating for stricter environmental protections, and improved transparency from industrial operations.
